Today as I was driving to work on the highway, I saw another car just like mine. Same make, model, color and generation. He wanted to get into my lane, so I slowed down 5 or 10 MPH to let him in. I felt I had a special bond with this person, which meant I would go slightly out of my way to help him out.
“Same team,” I thought.
But as I thought about it a little more, I came to an important realization: Aren’t a lot more people on the same team as me than just that person with the same car? As I considered all of the other folks on the road that morning, I thought: We’re all making the morning commute. We’re all stoked it’s Friday. We’re all on the same road. We’re all in Jacksonville. We’re all Americans.
We’re all human.
So next time, when you think you need to battle someone or compete for something as simple as a spot in the left lane or the front of the line at the store, I think it’s important to remember we’re all on the same team. We shouldn’t be so rushed and near-sighted as to think we can’t go slightly out of our way to help everyone else.
